Skin Check Champions is an Australian nonprofit that improves access to, and awareness of, early skin cancer detection in at-risk communities. It wanted a chatbot to connect Australians with local skin check specialists, book appointments and raise awareness of early detection.
The Challenge
The chatbot, SPOT BOT, had to run on Facebook Messenger and on the charity's website. It needed conversational flows to find specialists, book appointments, set up calendar reminders and give information on skin cancer. It also needed middleware to search a national health services directory and match users with GPs, skin clinics and dermatologists by location and need.
The Approach
BotForge gave SPOT BOT a friendly, personable character, pairing animated GIFs with conversational copy written to feel like a helpful friend. Multiple message trees handle the different journeys from discovery to booking.
- Specialist search: serverless Google Cloud Functions middleware searches the Healthdirect Australia national directory
- Booking: conversational flows guide users to find and book a skin check
- Reminders: calendar integration for appointment reminders
- Awareness: information on early detection of skin cancer
- Two channels: Messenger and the Skin Check Champions website, run on ManyChat
The teams designed the conversation flows together in Whimsical before building, and tested every journey from search to booking over several rounds.
The Outcome
SPOT BOT grew without any paid advertising, through shares and word of mouth. It reached thousands of unique users and booked thousands of skin checks, and early detection through the chatbot has found tens if not hundreds of skin cancers.
